Le icone sono immagini simboliche, perciò devono avere un aspetto più bello rispetto ad immagini fotorealistiche. Poi, le icone hanno dimensioni massime di 256 x 256 e sono quindi adatte per i display ad alta risoluzione. Le icone ad alta risoluzione permettono di avere un`ottima visualizzazione negli elenchi a icone grandi. Un`immagine di 256 x 256 da usare come icona è in via di principio supportata da XP, però una tale icona occupa 400Kb di spazio sul disco, cioè molto più dei 25Kb di un`icona standard XP.
