Le icone Vista lanciano uno stile di iconografia che conferisce un livello superiore di precisione e raffinatezza alle immagini Windows. Innanzitutto, le icone in Aero-style sono più realistiche che illustrative, ma non fotorealistiche. Le icone sono immagini simboliche, perciò devono avere un aspetto più bello rispetto ad immagini fotorealistiche. Poi, le icone hanno dimensioni massime di 256 x 256 e sono quindi adatte per i display ad alta risoluzione. Le icone ad alta risoluzione permettono di avere un’ottima visualizzazione negli elenchi a icone grandi. Infine, dovunque le abituali icone dei documenti vengono sostituite con miniature, per facilitarne la ricerca e l’identificazione. Un’immagine di 256 x 256 da usare come icona è in via di principio supportata da XP, però una tale icona occupa 400Kb di spazio sul disco, cioè molto più dei 25Kb di un’icona standard XP. Aha-Soft ha trovato un modo per superare questo inconveniente: Articons Pro usa compressione avanzata PNG per salvare immagini senza perdite e supporta immagini semitrasparenti con canale alpha a 8bit.
