How to change an icon that is presently on my desktop to one that I made

You can create a shortcut to your file.

To put a shortcut on the desktop:

Open Windows Explorer. Click the item, such as a file, program, folder, printer, or computer, for which you want to create a shortcut. On the File menu, click Create Shortcut. Drag the shortcut icon from Windows Explorer onto the desktop.

Than:
1) Right-click on the shortcut to bring up the context menu
2) Select the Properties command there
3) Press "Change Icon..." button
4) Select new icon there
