A great site is a usable one

With web design, when you think about flow we mostly think about "task flows" or "flow charts" but there's a different type of flow that you have to consider. It's that impression of complete absorption when you're engaged in something you like to do and are not disrupted by anxiety or boredom caused by tasks that are misdirecting, too long or overly taxing.
Flow, as a mental state, was primarily proposed by psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi and is described by a incorrect sense of time, a low level of self-consciousness, and full participation in the process at hand. Program engineers might feel it when they're writing code, gamers do feel it when playing Guitar Hero III, Christopher Cross felt it when he went sailing. For designers, it's just the feeling we hope to achieve in the users of our site.
How do we design sites that promote that experience? First, it begins with a site that sorts out a serious problem and is complex enough to require a certain amount of learning by people who use it. The goal should not certainly be to develop a simple page. The goal should be to design a site that feels painless to use no matter how complicated it actually is. But wait, you may think, hasn't there been a usability trend in web design over the last couple of years? Yes, but there's a learning curve for all the sites that want to sort out a complex problem. We shouldn't confuse simplicity with a desire to avoid excessive complexity.
The trick to make the complex feel friendly is to consider flow in your design. By developing a site that is smooth and intuitive and inspires flow, you make people get up-to-speed more quickly, lower the chance that current users leave your site and switch to another and produce users that recommend your page to other people. That way you will get more users, growing activity, and bigger awareness of your page.
The primary point in designing for flow is to determine certain goals for the users. It's important to develop both a global goal and smaller, incremental goals. Goals help people understand what is their final destination and what steps they'll take to get there.
