How do people navigate websites?

The Back Button is probably the most important browser buttons on any Web page, however, usually Web developers don't think of it while they're building their sites. In fact, it's very common to see "back to home" or "back to start" or simply "back" links incorporated into the content that they are designing. But unless these links have built in intelligence that knows exactly where the customer was prior to clicking them (like the software back arrow), then these links are just a sham - a guess at the way that the customer took over your site.

The Way Most People Surf the Web
Most users get to a Web page and slide. If it doesn't appear to be what they wanted to learn or needed to read about, they move on. And the fastest route out of any Web site is, you guessed it, the Back Arrow.
Actually, a lot of users don't even know they're doing so. They sit at a Web site with their mouse hovering over the scroll-bar, just in case they have to scroll down. Then, if nothing really interesting appears, they pull their mouse up to the upper left corner of the browser and return to their last location.
Take Advantage of the Back Button
  • Place your branding close to the back arrow As most people don't necessarily have to look while they're clicking back, placing your brand up there will bring it more attention when they move away.
  • Create items in that corner clickable Your logo should be clickable, but other text elements located in the upper left area of your page have to contain links also. Therefore, in case they miss the back arrow, they will get to somewhere else useful on your site.
  • Use server logs to find out where they arrive from when you have information on what they're returning to, you can address that right on your site, maybe even with altering elements that strictly display when they come from specific location. For example, someone coming from Google might not know the best ways to search your site. If you include details like how to navigate through the site when they arrive from a search engine they might want to stay longer.
