Originally, Internet was simpler and predominantly used as an information-sharing platform across borders. But now, it is everything we ever need and we can do all things sitting in front a computer! Websites are now a piece of the WWW with importance and recognition, and rightly called the face of an individual or business online. Different designers and developer are looking for ways to creatively design a website to grab attention in the already crowded WWW. For this reason, design trends are on the rise and long shadows are is one trend that's getting lot of attention lately.
So, what is long shadow all about?
Long shadow is a concept that is developed from flat design, another web design trend. Long shadows are predominantly popular in user interface components and widely used in icons. Basically, long shadows depict past the object that is mirrored. These shadows are often in 45-degree angle and add emphasis, mirroring an object well. The best part about these shadows is that, they're flat. Most designers create long shadows with a tint of the color used for the image, without graduation, shading or fading effects.
The idea is to creatively work around flat trend design and create long shadows to add depth. A clean and distinct shadow is what they aim at, which is achieved when same pattern of light is followed. This means, every shadow in a design should have the same degree and angle to mirror light and all the reflections should fall in the same direction, simultaneously, to create the shadow effect.
However, for now long shadow designs are limited to small images. So most designers stick with long shadow icons or buttons. The shadow makes the image get a 3D effect and creates an impression that the design isn't flat! Since it is more suitable for smaller elements, icons and buttons rule the roost with this design.
