The principles of web layouts

When you create a Web design, one of the most overlooked points of the design is the layout. Yes, a lot of people think about how to create a layout (which techniques to use), but the principles of Web layout are often completely ignored.

Space and Whitespace
Use the whole space, but don't be too strict in your use. In other words, use relative layout parts on your Web site, so that they expand and contract to fit the browser size.
Don't forget about the screen resolution. While the most computer users have moved away from 640x480 resolution, remember it when you're developing a layout. Having clients leave because all they can see is a title on their screen is not good customer service.
Apply color to define spaces. If you want to have a page that's a specific dimensions, you should center it in the browsed window and make the background color of the page a different color. This will help the page seam to resize for various browsers; bigger widows will simply have more background color, while smaller windows will contain less or none showing.

Images and Graphics
Align your images. The most typical layout mistake ever is to slap graphics into a side willy-nilly without thought to layout. If you just use an img tag and then write text to explain it, you'll have the image and a line of text to follow at the right of it. Applying the align attribute will help make your images part of the layout.
Balance the graphics and text on a page. It's really easy to captived with all those graphics and animations, but they can make a page very hard to read. When you're developing your layout, remember that images are a vital part of the layout, not just afterthoughts.

Text Width
Think about text width. This is often called the "scan length", and refers to the number of words that are are placed on one line. In general users can effortlessly read about 7 or 11 words in one line. Longer lines make your text hard to read, shorter than that and it's uneven and distracting. When designing your layouts make sure that the major text area displays the text in a readable width.
Centering paragraphs is inadvisable. One of the first layout tricks that a new designer gets familiar with is the center tag, and they center everything on their pages. However, centering is very hard to do good and it's often hard to read.
