How do people navigate the Web?

The Back Button is one of the most important browser buttons on any Web page, and yet most Web designers don't think of it while they're building their sites. Actually, very often I see "back to home" or "back to start" or just "back" links built into the content that they are developing. However if this links don't have a built in logic that is informed for sure where the customer was prior to clicking them (similar to the browser back button), then these links are simply a sham - a guess at the way that the user made over your site.

How Most People Surf the Web
The majority of users get to a Web site and slide. If it doesn't seem to be what they wanted to learn or had to read about, they move on. And the quickest route out of any Web site iscertainly the Back Button.
In fact, most users don't even know they're doing so. They sit at a Web site with their mouse moving over the scroll-bar, just in case they have to scroll the page. Then, if nothing really interesting comes along, they pull their mouse up to the upper left corner of the window and go back to their last location.
Take Advantage of the Back Button
  • Place your logo up near the back arrow While the majority of users don't really have to look while they're clicking back, locating your brand up there will get it more attention while they leave.
  • Make objects in that corner clickable The logo should be clickable, but the rest text objects that are in the upper left corner of your site should contain links as well. Therefore, in case they don't hit the back arrow, they will go somewhere else useful on your site.
  • Use server logs to find out where they came from If you have information on what they're going back to, you can address that right on your site, maybe even with altering elements that strictly display when the users arrive from that location. For instance, someone coming from Google will not know the best ways to search your site. If you mention instructions on how to navigate on the pages when they arrive from Google engine they might want to stay longer.
