How do people use websites?

The Back Button is one of the most widely used Web icon on any Web page, and yet most Web developers don't think of it while they're creating their pages. Actually, very often I notice "back to home" or "back to start" or just "back" links embedded into the content that they are designing. However unless these links have built in logic that is informed for sure where the customer was before to clicking them (similar to the software back arrow), then these links are just a sham - a guess at the path that the customer took through your site.

The Way Most People Browse the Web
The majority of people come to a Web page and glide. If it doesn't look like what they needed to study or had to read about, they leave. And the quickest way out of a Web page is, you guessed it, the Back Arrow.
In fact, most people don't even know they're doing so. They sit at a Web site with their mouse moving around the scroll-bar area, just in case they need to scroll the page. Then, unless something really interesting comes along, they pull their cursor up to the upper left corner of the browser and return to their previous location.
Make the Back Button Your Friend
  • Locate your branding up near the back button As the majority of people don't really have to look while they're clicking back, locating your logo close by will bring it more attention while they move away.
  • Make items in that corner clickable The logo should be a link, but the rest text objects that are in the upper left corner of your site should contain links also. Therefore, if they miss the back button, they might get to somewhere else useful on your site.
  • See server logs to determine where they came from If you know what they're returning to, you can address that right on your site, maybe even with dynamic elements that only display when the users arrive from that location. For example, someone coming from a search engine might not know the best ways to browse your site. If you include details like how to navigate on the pages when they arrive from Google engine they might want to stay longer.
