How do people use the Web?

The Back Arrow is probably the most widely used browser icon on any Web page, however, usually Web designers don't consider it while they're creating their sites. Actually, very often I notice "back to home" or "back to start" or simply "back" links embedded into the content that they are developing. But unless these links have built in logic that is informed exactly where the user was prior to clicking them (similar to the software back arrow), then these links are simply a scam - a guess at the way that the user made through your site.

How Most People Browse the Web
Most users come to a Web page and slide. If it doesn't look like what they needed to study or needed to read about, they move on. And the quickest way out of any Web page is, you guessed it, the Back Arrow.
In fact, a lot of people don't even know they're doing it. They look through a Web page with their cursor moving around the scroll-bar area, just in case they have to scroll down. Then, if nothing really interesting comes along, they rise their mouse up to the upper left side of the browser and return to their last location.
Make the Back Button Your Friend
  • Locate your branding up near the back arrow As most users don't necessarily need to look while they're clicking back, locating your brand up there will bring it more attention when they leave.
  • Create items in that corner clickable The logo should be a link, but the rest text elements that are in the upper left corner of your site should be clickable as well. Therefore, if they don't hit the back button, they might go somewhere else useful on your page.
  • See server logs to find out where they came from when you know what they're returning to, you are able to locate the link right on your page, maybe even with dynamic elements that strictly appear when they arrive from specific location. For example, someone coming from Google will not know the best ways to search your site. If you include details like how to search through the site when they come from a search engine you might get them to stay longer.
