When is the last time you saw a Web site in black and white?
Color is vital to the repertoire of a typical Web designer, and yet many designers don't understand that the color scheme they pick may may have a much more dramatic effect than they think it does. Colors are an element of design that people react to on a visceral level. Often, they don't realize they are affected by it. For example, in the U.S. most hospitals choose light blue and pale pink to dress their nurses. This is because these are cool, soothing colors, and upset patients relax a little in their presence. Once you understand your audience make up you can create a color scheme that works for them.
When choosing the colors for your Web page, you need to first (as always) consider your users. Is it a worldwide audience? Is it mainly Western? Eastern? What age group? Male? Female? All of these things, and a lot other should be considered when making color selections for your Web page.
Cultural Differences
Colors gain symbolism with cultural references in the culture you were brought up in. Depending on the the culture, colors can have the opposite meanings and even cause problems for your project. For example, in the East, white is the color of funerals while in the West white is the symbol of Weddings. If you plan to create a Wedding portal meant for an Asian audience and you picked white as a base color, you are bothering the people you're trying to reach.
Age Gradation
Young people tend to prefer , more solid colors, and adults tend to prefer softer colors. If you're writing to a kid's audience and you're selecting muted pastels and grayscale colors, the adults might like it, but the children will be long gone before the page finishes loading.
Social Differences
Marketing research in the America has shown that working class individuals tend to like colors that can be named: like blue, white, green, etc. While upper class people usually like colors that are more complex: like turquoise, azure, mauve, etc. This is why Target does their store logo in bright red.
Gender Differences
In many cultures, males tend to prefer cooler colors (blues and greens) and women tend to prefer warmer tones (reds and oranges). Western men are also more likely to be color blind and so unable to tell apart some of the differences in color on Web pages.
Trends
Colors, like all the other aspects in design, go through ins and outs in fashion. Solid black Web pages were at the top a couple of years ago, and now you hardly see it at all (but it will certainly come back into style as I write this). Colors also tend towards seasonality, meaning, the designs reflect the season they were built in: winter is usually grayscale; spring greens and bright colors; summer yellows; fall reds and copper.
