How do users navigate the Web?

The Back Button is one of the most important Web icon on any Web site, however, usually Web developers don't consider it while they're building their pages. Actually, it's very common to see "back to home" or "back to start" or simply "back" links built into the pages that they are developing. However unless these links have built in intelligence that knows for sure where the customer was prior they clicked (like the browser back button), then these links are just a sham - a guess at the way that the customer took over your site.

The Way Most People Browse the Web
Most people get to a Web site and slide. If it doesn't seem to be what they wanted to study or had to read about, they move on. And the quickest way out of any Web site is, you guessed it, the Back Button.
In fact, most people don't even know they're doing it. They sit at a Web site with their mouse moving over the scroll-bar area, just in case they have to scroll the page. Then, if nothing particularly interesting appears, they rise their cursor up to the upper left corner of the browser and return to their last location.
Make the Back Button Your Friend
  • Place your branding close to the back arrow While most people don't really have to look while they're pressing back, locating your brand close by will bring it more attention while they leave.
  • Make items in that area clickable Your logo should be a link, but other text elements located in the upper left area of your page should contain links as well. Therefore, in case they miss the back arrow, they might go some other useful area on your site.
  • See server logs to find out where they arrive from If you know what they're going back to, you are able to locate the link right on your site, perhaps even with dynamic elements that only appear when they arrive from that location. For example, someone coming from Google might not know the best ways to browse your site. If you include details on how to search through the site when they arrive from Google engine they might want to stay longer.
