How do people navigate the Web?

The Back Arrow is probably the most widely used Web icon on any Web site, and yet most Web designers don't think of it while they're creating their sites. In fact, it's very common to notice "back to home" or "back to start" or just "back" links built into the content that they are designing. But unless these links have built in logic that is informed exactly where the customer was prior to clicking them (similar to the software back arrow), then these links are simply a scam - a guess at the way that the user made over your site.

How Most People Surf the Web
The majority of users come to a Web site and glide. If it doesn't look like what they wanted to study or wanted to read about, they move on. And the fastest way out of any Web site iscertainly the Back Button.
In fact, a lot of people don't even know they're doing so. They look through a Web page with their mouse moving over the scroll-bar area, just in case they have to scroll the page. Then, if nothing particularly interesting comes along, they rise their mouse up to the upper left side of the browser and return to their previous location.
Make the Back Button Your Friend
  • Place your logo close to the back arrow While the majority of people don't really need to look when they're pressing back, locating your brand up there will bring it more attention when they move away.
  • Make items in that corner clickable The brand has to be a link, but the rest text elements located in the upper left area of your page have to be clickable as well. That way, in case they don't hit the back button, they will go somewhere else useful on your page.
  • See server logs to determine where they came from when you have information on what they're returning to, you can address that right on the page, perhaps even with altering elements that strictly display when the users come from that location. For example, someone coming from a search engine might not know the most efficient ways to search your site. If you include instructions on how to search through the site when they arrive from a search engine you might get them to stay longer.
