How do users use the Web?

The Back Arrow is probably the most important browser icon on any Web site, and yet most Web developers don't think of it when they're building their sites. In fact, it's very common to see "back to home" or "back to start" or simply "back" links incorporated into the pages that they are designing. However if this links don't have a built in logic that knows for sure where the user was prior to clicking them (like the software back button), then these links are just a sham - a guess at the path that the user took through your site.

How Most People Surf the Web
The majority of people get to a Web page and glide. If it doesn't appear to be what they needed to study or had to read about, they leave. And the quickest way out of any Web site is, you guessed it, the Back Button.
In fact, a lot of people don't even realize they're doing so. They look through a Web page with their cursor moving around the scroll-bar area, just in case they have to scroll down. Then, if nothing particularly interesting appears, they rise their mouse up to the upper left side of the window and go back to their previous location.
Take Advantage of the Back Button
  • Place your branding up near the back arrow While the majority of users don't necessarily have to look while they're clicking back, placing your brand close by will bring it more attention while they move away.
  • Make items in that corner clickable The logo should be clickable, but other text elements located in the upper left area of your site have to be clickable as well. That way, if they miss the back button, they will get to somewhere else useful on your page.
  • Use server logs to determine where they arrive from If you know what they're going back to, you are able to locate the link right on the site, maybe even with dynamic elements that strictly appear when they arrive from specific location. For example, someone coming from a search engine will not know the most efficient ways to search your site. If you mention details like how to navigate through the site when they come from a search engine you might get them to stay longer.
