Web design basics

1. Think small, about 10-12KB for one image. Yes, depending on the source, the number of cable users is going up. However, slow sites are still really annoying, even if you're on a T1. And huge images are a first cause of slow pages. It's easy to revise your images.
2. Be sure ot use images that match the content. Only because you took a nice photo of your cat doesn't mean you should have it on your page about Web Design. The only exception I can make to this is for "design" graphics. These are photos or icons that build up the design of your page, and are not meant to illustrate the subject.
3. Never insert images that flash or move or glitter or rotate or do anything on your site. Or use them niggardly. Numerous researches indicate that flashing images are distracting and irritating to users. In fact, in one focus group I've seen the users manually hide flashing graphics so that they would be able to read the other content on the page.

4. Stick with classic layouts. I've been over some sites that have 6 or 8 frames on one page. the other site had a layout where you had to scroll to the right to read all the content of the page (but you never scrolled vertically). These layouts are cute, and you might find them fun to build, but they will drive your users crazy. The reason for the 3-column layout being so common on Web sites and newspapers is because it works. You sure consider it to be boring, but you'll have more readers if you use something intuitive that they can understand.
5. Treat your images as elements in your layouts. Graphics can be more than just images when you use them as actual elements in your layouts. An easy example is the word wrap done around a graphic, but any image you have on your page is a layout element and should be treated as such.
