The basics of web layouts

When you create a Web design, one of the many overlooked aspects of the development is the layout. Now, a lot of people are figuring out how to create a layout (CSS, tables, frames, etc.), but the basics of Web layout are often completely forgotten.

The use of space
Use the whole space, but don't be too strict with it. That means, use scaleable layout sections on your Web site, so that they can be scaled to fit the browser window.
Don't forget about the screen resolution. As the majority of people have switched from 640x480 resolution, remember it when you're developing a layout. Having clients leave because all they can see is a logo on their screen is not good customer service.
Apply color to define different blocks. If you need a page of a specific width, why not center it on the browser screen and make the background color of the page a different color. This will make the page appear to resize for different browsers; larger widows will simply have more background color, and smaller windows will have less or none of it.

Images and Graphics
Align your images. One of the most typical layout mistake ever is to put images into a side willy-nilly without thought to layout. If you just use an img tag and then put some text to explain it, you'll get the image and then one line of text to the right of it. Using the align attribute will help incorporate graphics into layout.
Match the graphics and text on a page. It's really easy to captived with lots of graphics and animations, but they can make a page very hard to read. When you're developing your layout, remember that graphics are a vital part of the design, not just scrap elements.

Text Width
Think about text width. This is usually named the "scan length", and means to how many words are placed on one line. Most people can easily read about 7 or 11 words on a line. Longer lines make your text hard to read, shorter than that and it's disjointed and annoying. When creating your layouts make sure that the main text area displays the text in a readable width.
Centering paragraphs is inadvisable. One of the first layout techniques that a new designer learns is the center tag, and they center everything on their sites. But centering is very hard to do good and it's often unreadable.
