Web design basics

Images
1. Keep it compact, about 10-12KB for one picture. Yes, depending on the source, the number of broadband users is increasing. But slow sites are still very disappointing, even if you're on a T1. And giant images are a first cause of long loading times. It's simple to revise your images.
2. Always use graphics that work with the content. Only because you have an adorable photo of your cat doesn't mean you should place it on your Web site about Database Development. The main exception I would make to this is for "design" graphics. These are pictures or graphics that help make up the design of your page, and are not meant to illustrate the content.
3. Do not insert graphics that blink or move or glitter or rotate or are in any way inconstant on your page. Or insert them niggardly. Recent studies indicate that animated images are disturbing and irritating to users. In fact, in one focus group I watched the users manually cover up flashing graphics so that they could read the other content on the page.

Layout
4. Use classic layouts. I've seen some sites that use numerous frames on a single page. Another site used a layout which made users scroll horizontally to see all the content of the page (but they never had to scroll down). These layouts are cute, and you will certainly find them fun to create, but they will make your readers crazy. The reason that the 3-column layout is so popular on Web sites and press is because it works. You might think it's boring, however, you'll keep more readers if you use something intuitive that they actually know.
5. Treat your graphics as rightful parts in your layouts. Graphics can be something more than just images when you apply them as rightful elements in the layouts. An easy example is when you wrap text around a graphic, but any image you have on your site is a layout element and has to be treated as one.
