How do people use the Web?

The Back Arrow is one of the most important browser icon on any Web site, and yet usually Web developers don't think of it when they're building their sites. In fact, very often I notice "back to home" or "back to start" or just "back" links incorporated into the content that they are developing. However if this links don't have a built in intelligence that knows exactly where the customer was before to clicking them (similar to the browser back arrow), then these links are just a scam - a guess at the path that the customer took over your site.

How Most Users Browse the Web
The majority of users come to a Web page and skim. If it doesn't seem to be what they needed to learn or wanted to read about, they move on. And the quickest way out of any Web site iscertainly the Back Arrow.
In fact, most people don't even know they're doing it. They sit at a Web site with their cursor hovering around the scroll-bar, just in case they have to scroll the page. Then, if nothing really interesting appears, they pull their mouse up to the upper left corner of the window and return to their last location.
Take Advantage of the Back Button
  • Place your logo close to the back button As the majority of users don't necessarily have to look while they're clicking back, locating your logo up there will bring it more attention while they leave.
  • Create items in that area clickable Your brand should be clickable, but other text elements that are in the upper left area of your page have to contain links also. That way, in case they don't hit the back arrow, they will go somewhere else useful on your page.
  • See server logs to determine where they arrive from If you know what they're returning to, you can locate the link right on your page, perhaps even with altering elements that strictly appear when the users come from specific location. For instance, someone coming from a search engine might not know the most efficient ways to search your site. If you mention instructions like how to navigate on the pages when they arrive from a search engine they might want to stay longer.
