How do users use the Web?

The Back Arrow is probably the most widely used browser buttons on any Web page, however, usually Web developers don't consider it while they're creating their sites. In fact, very often I see "back to home" or "back to start" or just "back" links incorporated into the pages that they are designing. However if this links don't have a built in logic that knows for sure where the customer was before to clicking them (like the browser back button), then these links are just a sham - a guess at the way that the user took over your site.

How Most People Browse the Web
The majority of users come to a Web site and slide. If it doesn't look like what they needed to learn or needed to read about, they leave. And the fastest way out of any Web page is, you guessed it, the Back Arrow.
In fact, a lot of users don't even realize they're doing so. They look through a Web page with their cursor moving around the scroll-bar, just in case they have to scroll down. Then, unless something really interesting comes along, they pull their cursor up to the upper left side of the window and go back to their previous location.
Take Advantage of the Back Button
  • Place your logo close to the back button As the majority of users don't really have to look when they're pressing back, placing your brand up there will bring it more attention when they leave.
  • Create items in that corner clickable Your brand has to be a link, but other text elements located in the upper left area of your page have to be clickable as well. That way, in case they don't hit the back arrow, they might go some other useful area on your site.
  • See server history to determine where they came from If you know what they're going back to, you can address that right on the page, maybe even with dynamic elements that only display when they come from that location. For instance, a user coming from a search engine might not know the best ways to search your site. If you include details on how to navigate on the pages when they come from a search engine you might get them to stay longer.
