The principles of web layouts

When you make a Web design, one of the many forgotten aspects of the development is the layout. Now, many people think about how to do a layout (which techniques to use), but the principles of Web layout are commonly completely ignored.

How to use your space
Use the whole space, but don't be too strict in your use. That is to say, use relatively sized layout parts on your Web pages, so that they can be resized to match the browser size.
Don't forget about the screen resolution. As the majority of computer users have switched from 640x480 sized monitors, remember it when you're developing a layout. Having customers go away because all that is visible is a logo on their monitor is poor customer service.
Apply color to define spaces. If you need a page of a specific width, why not center it in the browsed window and make the background color of the page a different color. This will help the page seam to resize for various browsers; larger browsers will simply show more background color, and smaller windows will contain less or none showing.

What to do about graphics
Align your images. The most typical newbie layout mistakes is to slap images into a side willy-nilly without thought to layout. If you just use an img tag and then put some text to explain it, you'll get the picture and then one line of text to the right of it. Using the align attribute will help incorporate graphics into layout.
Match the images and paragraphs on a page. It's really easy to get carried away with all those images and animations, but they can make a page very hard to read. When you're developing your layout, don't forget that images are a vital part of the layout, not just scrap elements.

Text Alignment
Put in some thought about text width. This is often named the "scan length", and means to the number of words that are are placed on one line. In general people can easily read about 7 or 11 words on a line. Longer lines make your text hard to read, shorter than that and it's disjointed and distracting. When designing your layouts make sure that the major text is displayed in a comfortably readable width.
Centering paragraphs is inadvisable. One of the easiest layout tricks that a new designer gets familiar with is the center tag, and they center everything on their sites. However, centering is very difficult to do well and it's often hard to read.
